Missing the canal festival already? We are! There’s no Burnley Canal Festival this year, but we’ll be back! Meanwhile, if you are looking for some family friendly and FREE OF CHARGE activities as summer drifts into autumn, come and join us! Something is happening along the towpath…
Kennet comes to Burnley Wharf
Sat 24 August 2019 – 11am to 4pm
Burnley Wharf by Weavers’ Triangle Visitor Centre, BB11 1JZ
Come and visit this wonderful floating interactive museum. The Kennet is one of the few remaining ‘short boats’ built for the Leeds & Liverpool Canal still in existence. At 62 feet long it was designed to be able to pass over the whole canal, unlike the slightly longer traditional length boats. Built in 1947 it carried goods on the canal until the early 1960s when it became a maintenance vessel for British Waterways, a role it continued until the 1980s. Now, thanks to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Society it carries a cargo of heritage visiting schools and events up and down the canal. Join us and come on board to see the exhibits and learn more about the history and heritage of the canal, the boats and the boat people that travelled on it. The Kennet is always in high demand, and it may be a while before it visits Burnley again, so don’t miss your chance to visit!
We will also have the melodious accompaniment of Ben Farmer, who’ll be running his accordion through all sorts of folk ditties. You may have run into Ben along the towpath at past Burnley Canal Festivals, if so you’ll understand why we are so pleased that he can join us. (Ben will be playing between 12noon-3pm – although he’ll probably take a couple of tea breaks during that time!)
And of course you can complete your visit by stepping into the Visitor Centre and learning more about the story of the canal, cotton and the Weavers’ Triangle. You can take a trip back in time and visit the Victorian schoolroom, Edwardian bathroom and weaver’s dwelling. You can find out how cotton was made and have a go at weaving. There’s plenty for children as well – with a children’s corner, trails and quizzes and a wonderful working model fairground based on the old Burnley Fair. Plus you can find light refreshments available in the Victorian Parlour. Entrance is FREE.
If you are approaching from Manchester Road you can access the towpath through the Visitor Centre, why not have a look round while you’re in there. Alternatively there is a path down to the towpath on the opposite side of the road.
