About

Launched in 2012, the Canal Festival has grown each year, steered by volunteers and supported by partners including Burnley Council and Canal & River Trust.  The Festival is now a part of the Super Slow Way arts programme and is managed by Mid Pennine Arts.

Last year, while building work took over the Festival’s main site, organisers were able to compensate with a ‘Meanwhile’ series of towpath events through the autumn.  Current circumstances, however, make this option much more difficult for autumn 2020.

We’ve put a lot of thought into whether or not we could do something similar this year, but have decided that it isn’t possible to plan for any ‘Meanwhile on the Towpath’ events in September/October 2020.  The continuing local lockdowns, and uncertainty over conditions in the near future, mean that the safety and wellbeing of participants and public must take priority.  Instead, we are starting now to plan for the full return of the Festival proper in August 2021.

“Brillant day at the Canal Festival today. We were there for four hours and didn’t get round to everything. Our children want to go back tomorrow to finish it off! A real credit to the organisers.”  Festival attender, 2018

“The best family event I have ever been to! We had the best day ever, lots of laughs, great chat, mega fun! We will be back next year! “
